It is Christmas 2001. Two lads from High Green, Sheffield, receive electric guitars from Santa. They are 15 and 16, and the first thing they learn to play together is Monty Norman's James Bond Theme .

Austin-based solo blues-rock performer Dax Riggs has quite the musical past, having fronted various sludge, metal and indie bands in the '90s and '00s before debuting his own material as a solo artist in 2007. The interesting this is that he manages to incorporate various elements of those past influences into his wide and varied sound now. Basically: This is rock 'n' roll--and in its purest form, in a sense.

During the Christmas season in 1961, a grade-school girl walked into a record store on 86th Street in Brooklyn, N.Y. The dollar bill she exchanged for the No. 1 pop song of the day, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens, represented a month's allowance. It was the first, but certainly not the last, record Barbara Underhill ever bought. When she was a bit older, she attended many of the now legendary rock 'n' roll shows produced by radio disc jockey Murray the K and presented at the Fox Theater in Brooklyn.

The supergroup wasn't so super ... for about seven seconds. Them Crooked Vultures walked on stage Thursday at Oakland's Fox Theater, smiling to a warm reception. The first song started ... and singer Josh Homme's guitar sputtered and died.
